[FOOD] Fortunate Restaurant

make a comment

So my mom won 4th place in some singing competition on Saturday night so she decided she wanted to have some Dim Sum on Sunday morning. It was already 9am when she decided, too late to go to Hong Seng anymore. Lazy old us decided we should go to the one nearest our place, Fortunate Restaurant at Toa Payoh Central.

Their food used to be fairly okay, before it was bought over by Yum Cha holdings.. But it’s been a while since we’ve been back there, and I personally was hoping it would have improved a little.

Alas, unfortunately..

Char Siew Cheong Fun

Prawn Cheong Fun

First dish was already an omen of worse to come (or just as bad). The cheong fun was dry and the skin thick. The Hong Kong version of Cheong Fun is is supposed to have such thin skin that it’s sometimes a little difficult to pick up the pieces using chopsticks. This version, however, I could pick the pieces up so easily. And the soya sauce didn’t even seep into the Cheong Fun at all. Bleh

Steam Broccoli & Fish Paste

The broccoli was overcooked and falling apart into little pieces. Broccolis are supposed to retain that bit of crunch and not taste like some mushy… thing. It seems as if this was left in the steamer and nobody wanted to eat it, even the paste was sticking to the plate.

Siew Mai

And I thought this might be the safest bet. I mean, Siew Mai is the most common Dim Sum dish that most restaurants can do fairly okay. Again, tasteless. No amount of chili I dunked this in could make it any tastier.

Braised Chicked Feet

By this time, I had no expectations. I’ll just eat to fill my stomach. Not much flesh, too tough, bland.

Steamed Meat wrapped in Beancurd Skin

Fried version of above

Henceforth I shall stop mentioning anything about the tastelessness of the food, unless it’s otherwise.

Steamed Baby Pork Ribs

Not enough black beans not enough chili…

Fried Carrot Cake

Ah finally something that tasted a little better. I only took a small bite as I’m not a big fan of fried carrot cake in this form, but there was at least some semblance of taste in this.

Xiao Long Bao

By this time, my tastebuds have gone on strike.

Prawn Dumplings (Har Kao)

Pig Trotters in Black Vinegar

The moment I drank the soup, I missed Hong Seng sooooo much!

Fried Prawn Dumplings

Salad Prawn

Topshell in Sweet & Sour Sauce

Nothing special about the sauce but at least the top shell was fresh enough.

DESSERTS SECTION

Longan Tofu

I thought this was from a can! Sure tasted like it.

Gui Ling Gao

Mango Sago

Too sweet. Plus the Mango probably came from some puree thing.

I doubt I’ll go back there again. Almost every single dish was tasteless, with probable exception of the fried stuff.. I mean, come on, all fried stuff tastes okay. The act of deep frying makes it edible. Plus, it’s not cheap. The bill came up to S$100+. For food that tastes so boring, it’s so expensive!
